In order to record this kind of drum we need two microphones. But just placing the microphone on the front of the drum is not enough. So, planning is needed to decide where the mike should be placed. It would be a good idea to place the bottom mic exactly to the opposite of the top mic. Has there ever been a concert you were just dying to go see, but by the time you got through on the phone with the box office, the tickets were all sold out? Well get in line! No, really! For some shows, you have to camp out at a ticketing box office overnight to be in line early enough to grab a ticket.

So often today, the demand for concert tickets is larger than the ticket supply. So, if you want those tickets, you have to be one of the first people in line. Of course, there is always the phone and Internet, but in my experience, I've always had better luck, and better seats, camping out in line.

First, and most importantly, after you've picked the concert you want to see, you need to find out what date and time it goes on sale. The most common on-sale date/time is Saturday mornings at 10:00 am. But, of course, this may vary, so double check. For many performers, there are pre-sales. However, the codes for those sales are usually provided by a fan club membership, which costs extra money. And in today's economy - who has that?

Secondly, you need to figure out where you're going to buy the tickets from. There are usually only two options here: Ticketmaster, or the venue box office. You could always get your tickets from a secondary ticket broker, but I'll get to that later. Ticketmaster has box offices all over the place. So, it would be best to find out which is closer to you: a Ticketmaster location, or the venue itself.

Okay, so now you know where you're going and when you're going! Good! But you're probably still wondering how early you need to get there, huh? Well, that all depends. If it's a super popular concert, and it's sold out the last few years in a row, or in the previous cities, where it went on sale first - it's probably going to be an overnighter. And that's why you're reading this anyway - right? So, get your bags packed and grab some friends!

Plan on getting to the location the night before the tickets actually go on sale. In some cases, you may need to get there at least 24 hours before, but let's assume it's just an overnighter, and you can get there in the evening, when you get off of work or school, whatever the case may be. The most important thing is a lawn chair! Get that first! Below is the list of other necessities, and any notes I can think of.

Lawn (or camp) chair - once you wake up in the morning, you'll probably have to take your tent down, but there will still be several hours of waiting ahead of you. Yes, you can stand or sit on the floor, but trust me, after about two hours, you'll wish you had one of these!

Tent - you might want to check with the location before you bring this. Some places have ordinances against using them in public places, like outside of a store. But, it is helpful to have, in case you are allowed to have one.

Sleeping bag/blankets/pillow - again, how many you need will depend on your comfort zone. Some people only need a sheet to be able to sleep anywhere, some need a little more, so bring whatever feels best for you. And remember, you can always leave stuff in your car and get it only when you need it. No use in hogging the sidewalk if you don't need to

Water/food/drinks and a cooler - Again, the amount you'll need to bring depends on you. Just remember though, you probably won't have access to a refrigerator or any heating device (microwave, oven, toaster), so bring stuff that doesn't need to be heated up.

The cooler, obviously, will keep things cool. Bottled water, sodas, juice boxes, sandwiches, chips, pretzels, and dip are all great things to have. You could always call for pizza delivery, but I have found some chains don't deliver unless you have an actual address for them. You could always use the location address, but again, keep it simple.

Money - Yeah, don't forget you have to pay for those tickets

Friends/cards/games - You will get bored. And if you're standing in line by yourself, you'll get real bored around all those strangers. Although, conversations are usually struck up and people tend to bond over their shared experience, it's still best to bring someone you know along with you.

Alright, so now you should be packed up and ready to go! Another great reason to bring a friend is that you'll have someone to hold your place in line. So, grab your friend too and get to the box office! As soon as you get there, stake out your spot in line. Set up your tent, or whatever you have. Then, get comfortable.

I did wait in line once for HFStival tickets, and the woman at the front of the line had been doing this for years. So, she started a list - as soon as someone else got it line, their name was added to the list. This helped to keep things fair in line - there was no "cutting" the line; everyone knew who everyone else was, and where their spot was. You could do this, if you're first in line, but don't feel that it's required.

So, assuming you've made it through the night, wake up early and put your tent and other bulky items back in the car, or out of the way somehow. Once those doors open, you don't want to be tripping over someone's stuff, trying to get in the door. Conversely, you don't want your things to be trampled. Also, once all the bulky stuff is gone, the line seems like it gets shorter - YAY! It doesn't actually - you're just closer to the people in front of you, but by then, any seeming success feels great!

Set out your lawn or camp chair, and get ready to wait some more. Hopefully, someone in line will offer to make a coffee and bagel run, or you could do this yourself. Again, if you have that friend with you, he or she can hold down both of your spots while you go to the coffee shop, or wherever.

Once the doors open, get your butt moving to get those great tickets! Once it's your turn, the ticket agent (the person behind the counter at the ticket machine) will ask you how many tickets you need, and then will tell you what seats are available. Get them! The seating options only get worse the longer you wait. Then, pay the money and enjoy the show!

For those who were unsuccessful, or who don't feel like doing all that work: The secondary ticket broker will be your best bet. A secondary ticket broker is not affiliated with the box office, performer, or venue in any way. They are a company that buys and sells tickets on the secondary market. So, the prices for the tickets will probably be higher, but you'll have a variety of seating locations (want 3rd row on the floor? No problem!).

There are many secondary ticket brokers out there. However, make sure, if you decide to purchase tickets this way, that the broker is registered with the Better Business Bureau, and the National Association of Ticket Brokers. You want to make sure you're buying from a legit place, after all. Also, let's say you waited in line and got those great tickets you wanted, and for some reason, you can't make it to the show after all.

Ticketmaster and most box offices do not have refund or return policies. Again, this is where secondary brokers work to your advantage. Most brokers also buy tickets. So if you can't make it to a show, call a broker, and see if you can't at least get your money back by selling them your ticket!

Bob Findlays Bold Move to Centralise Begins to Pay Dividends

Prior to Scots rocker Bob Findlay centralising his music and fanbase to ReverbNation he was hovering around the 250-300 mark. Over the last several weeks he has been hovering around the 150-200 mark, at one point reaching position 144 in the rock charts.

Not being an avid follower of his rankings Findlay seems somewhat underwhelmed by these figures. He told me recently “The only reason that I centralised to ReverbNation was to save time going from site to site.” Findlay was quick to add, “ReverbNation also give you the best statistical breakdown as to who’s listening to what, how much of the somg their listening to, how many letters they open and where they’re listening from….It makes it much easier to target the listeners, for want of a better word.”

Findlays’ personal website also appears to have benefited from his centralisation. Over the las few weeks there has been something of an onslaught of people joining his mailing list, which has just surpassed the 20, 000 mark.

Just prior to recommencing part-time work as a State Registered Nurse, Findlay handed over total control of the site to his colleague, Dave Taylor. “Dave’s done the majority of the site from the start, anyway. I just wanted to approve anything that goes on there. Lately it’s just not an option, so I’ve left it with Dave and he’s doing a great job.

The majority of correspondence from Findlays’ site are actually carried out by Taylor, who makes a point of mentioning this to avoid misleading people. Findlay said of this, “If and when I have the time, I sit and respond to as many emails as I can. It’s a real buzz.” Findlay is more than aware of the importance of maintaining regular contact with fans who have supported him. “It’s probably as important, if not more important, than the actual music itself in lots of cases.”, Findlay said.

When asked what he thought the future may hold for him music-wise, he rather quirkily said, “You’d have to ask a psychic person that one.”

Paradoxically, since having marginally more time on his hands since centralising, he has not set foot in the studio in over a week. “There’s just nothing there.”, said Findlay, tapping his head. “I’ve actually got two songs from “Rough Edges” that I have a few ideas for, so I imagine I’ll be working on them pretty soon.”

That's not to say that The Integral wouldn't fit right in, they'd just do so with a lot more edge and originality.

The Integral's music is very dynamic yet concise, never letting the band's offbeat twists and turns ever overtake ''the song''. The vocals stream melodically over the music and the lyrics and hooks are impeccable. Heart-stopping heavier numbers like Constant and Cycle contrast more ambient and psychedelic-inspired moments found in Disassembled and the instantly memorable For Days on End clearly demonstrating the band's willingness to experiment. A mind-bending instrumental track is even included for good measure, displaying a superb mix of groove and technique jam-packed with breaks, off-time measures, and punches. The Integral's approach works very well throughout and never grows tired. In 2003, under the name Pacer, the band released an excellent 7-song EP entitled Involuntary Movement instantly setting the bar extremely high. Unlike most bands who suffer the dreaded ''sophomore slump'' The Integral have managed to surpass their listeners' expectations and prove that they are here to stay, and even better things are yet to come.

This is a standout release and you will not want to skip through any songs, which is a hard find these days. Most Indie releases are plagued with murky production, but the sound quality on this disc is excellent. A guitar is a type of musical instrument with ancient roots that is used in a wide variety of musical styles. It usually has six strings, but four, seven, eight, ten and twelve string guitars also exist. An electric guitar is the kind of guitar that uses pickups to convert the vibration of its steel cored string into electrical current, which is then amplified.

There are various ways to record an electric guitar. The traditional method is to connect to a really good amplifier. The latest option is to plug the guitar directly into the computer and use a software plug-in to handle the amp and the speaker modeling.

When recording an electric guitar, the amp is the important factor as far as the mic is concerned, and thus its position is important. The dynamic mic produces a solid sound with a smooth high end. However its position has just as much bearing on the tone as the mic itself.

One way to capture the sound of a large stack is to set up the stack in a large room, play it loud and put the microphone several feet away so that the combination of all the speakers can be recorded. Using this method, the mic captures the guitar sound as much as the audience would.

One of the microphones can be inverted though that does not produce the best result. Here using a capacitor microphone as the distant one often produces a sense of space, but the ultimate bottom line is that anything that sounds good goes with the guitar.

The biggest problem that many amateur guitarists face is poor tone. In order to solve this problem the recorder should check the amp and guitar combination on microphone level and then should decide where they would be placed. Tone should be adjusted but one thing should be kept in mind. The low end will increase if the microphone is placed close to the source. This is known as proximity effect.

The mic that is used for electric guitar recording is preferably a dynamic microphone because of its capability to endure high volumes. These are the technical things that one should keep in mind. But there are some simple points that will help while recording.

As a first and very basic rule, one should make sure that the guitar is in very good condition, that is, its strings are properly fitted. Tuning must be checked before every take as it is inclined to flow in warm studio.

Equipments containing transformers will tend to cause hum interference on electric guitar especially those of single coil pickups. Computer monitors in particular also cause serious interference problems with guitar pickups, so it is advisable to keep them as far away as possible.

While using different electric guitar types or sounds for recording, two or more overdrive guitar parts should be kept to keep the sounds separate in the mix. For example, using a single coil setting for one part and a humbucker for another.

First, I want to examine the top 3 ways in which many talented (and some not so talented) people, try, and fail to get noticed every year...

American Idol / X-Factor...

There can be only one American Idol / X-factor winner every year, and there are only a few people who have ever had a career longer than 1 year even after winning the competition. The person who came second is instantly forgotten. So if you are serious about a career in the music industry then you won't want to rely on TV competitions to be your only way of getting noticed.

Demos that just get thrown away...

You can always send of stacks of demos to record companies and other people in the industry, but since everyone’s personal computer is capable of producing a 'demo' these days there is no real value in a demo these days. How is your demo going to stand out from the pile that these companies receive every single day? The reality is that most demos go straight in the bin when they haven't even been listened to! Is it really worth spending lots of money on recording your demo when very few people will listen to it?

Auditions where you don't get a chance to show your talent...

You could always go to auditions, however you are rarely given an opportunity to showcase your talent, as a judgement is made about your looks as soon as you walk in the door. Even if you are clearly the most talented singer on the day, if your look isn't exactly what they are looking then you will be unsuccessful. These endless chain of auditions can get pretty disheartening after a while, and if you don't live near a major city (and I mean New York, London or Los Angeles), it can get pretty costly to attend these auditions.

The thing is that record companies ARE always looking for the next big artist to come along, as this means lots of money for you and for them.

The problem is how do you get out there and get noticed...?

Imagine this...

You come off stage one evening, and one of the audience comes up to you and says, "Hi, my brother works as a manager for "some famous band" and he's always telling me to look out for new acts that he might be able to manage. When I heard you start singing I just knew I had to tell him about you, so I phoned him up and let him listen to you sing, and he's asked me to give you his number, can you call him tomorrow?"

So you gladly accept this number and call this guys brother up. You arrange to send off the demo you recorded a few weeks earlier when a couple of musicians who had seen you performing wrote some songs for you because they thought you were great! Your demo is now not getting thrown in the bin at the record company, but being passed around the bosses who want to see you perform.

You then get invited to perform for these record company bosses, and because you're an experienced and confident performer, you give the show of your life and before you know it you have a record contract.

It's all about making contacts...

Ok, so you're probably thinking 'that all sounds a bit too easy' or 'but surely it doesn't happen like that in the real world'. Well, I’m 24 years old, and I’ve been a professional solo singer since I was 20, and I’m currently in negotiations with a company regarding my first album release. I've been offered three record deals in the past however I've ultimately turned them down due to artistic differences. However, all the contacts I’ve made over the last 4 years have come from being out there performing. I've met other singers, songwriters, agents, managers and like in the example I’ve used above, family members of major recording industry managers.

Now you can choose one of three paths...

You can do nothing about your dream, and look back in 20 years and ask yourself why you didn't go for it when you had the opportunity!

You can take your chance applying for TV shows, attending auditions and sending off demos. But you know the reasons why these methods rarely work, even for the most talented singers.

You can put yourself out there on stage and perform, get yourself noticed, build up your contacts in the industry and make things happen for yourself.

Get out there and people WILL listen to you!

So I really hope you've gone for 3. Now make the decision to make it happen! What is stopping you?

'I can't just give up work, I need the money?' - Of course you shouldn't give up work. You can sing as much as your voice can handle or as little as you need to to fulfil other commitments you have! Oh, and you'll probably find the extra cash handy too!

I'm still at school, aren't I too young?' - No way! School is a great place to do musical stuff. It'll be really easy to get a band together and there will be plenty of places that you can play!

There are loads of ways to get yourself out there and work as a singer, I started out doing just a couple of gigs a month while I was working during the day, although after 3 months I was earning nearly twice as much from singing as I was from my day job, so I quit! Now, I spend my Monday mornings having a nice long lie in, rather than stuck in traffic!

The thing is that there are lots of people who are very average singers out there who earn a good amount of cash from singing like this...and the people who pay these people are fed up of paying for average singers and are willing and eager to pay great money to hire great singers like you!

There are loads of ways to get out there and make money but there is more to it than just going into your local live music venue and asking to sing! In the box below I'll be looking at some of the things you'll need to have thought about before you head out there on stage!

Here are some things you'll need to consider...

Will you be a solo singer or a band? - It can be easier starting out as part of a band, but being a soloist also has some major advantages? Of course you can always do both!!

What kind of music will you sing? - You can pretty much sing whatever type of music you want. But you'll need to think about what type of music your audience will want to hear!

Your first gig - an exciting and nerve-wracking occasion...and you'll want to make it go right, how will you go about this?

What kind of equipment will you need and how will you use it? - At a very basic level you need to know a bit about microphones and what is the right way to sing through a microphone...its very different to singing without one!!!

How will you put your set together? - You can just go out there and sing your songs in a random order, but you'll stun audiences if you take the time and put it together properly!

How will you find work? - You'll want to find an agent, and there are agents out there who will want you on their book, trust me!

What venues will you be working in? - As a singer you will need to approach different venues slightly differently.

So there you go...just a few things to think about. Of course there are other things, rehearsals, what to wear, promotional photographs etc...

Unfortunately, most people just go out there and don't even think about half the stuff that I've talked about, and end up giving pretty bad, poorly presented shows. Trust me, I often work with other singers and the vast majority of them are simply not very good! These singers quickly get themselves a bad reputation, get fewer gigs, and less money as a result. It's a real shame when people who have great voices and fantastic potential fail to think about these easy to avoid problems, and basically destroy their singing careers before they even start!

Of course this can all be avoided!

WAV files are huge. Take, for example, the sound your PC makes every time you start Windows. It only lasts a few seconds, yet the file size is a staggering 676k. MPEG Audio Layer 3

MP3 – or MPEG Audio Layer 3, to acknowledge its full title – is basically a file format which produces near-CD quality, in about one twelfth of the space of a WAV file. It was developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group – hence the acronym – which was responsible for MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and the development of MPEG-4. How Layer-3 decoding achieves such compression, without a huge hit to the quality of output, is quite a feat. Terms like ‘perceptual audio coding’ and ‘psycho-acoustic compression’ are enough to impress anyone, even if you haven’t a clue what they mean.

Essentially, the superfluous information is removed from the signal, and by superfluous we are mainly talking about all the frequencies that are beyond the range the human ear can pick up.

Caution about Copyright

No one was quicker to realize this than the pirates. MP3 is not illegal, but copyright still applies to any piece of music, regardless of form. Therefore, the huge upsurge in MP3 files that appeared on the Net – mostly ripped from copyrighted audio CDs and converted to MP3 format – stepped on to the wrong side of the law and caused great consternation in the record industry.

In order to record sound effects for a personal or professional sound effect library one needs two things: sound itself and an object with which to record sound. The former should not be a problem finding as sound permeates existence. The later is easily available in a variety of formats and forms, though a basic handheld digital unit with a T shaped stereo microphone is the simplest and most efficient. Personally I’ve tried all sorts of pricey gear and mics throughout my sonic adventures only to discover that a solid $150 to $400 handheld digital recorder no larger than an old-school cassette tape box suffices to create sounds good enough for placement in any film, tv, and media project. In addition, these units run on battery power and the recorded files can generally be dragged onto your desktop via USB.

Be aware, however, that any device you use must record up to at least a 48k sample rate. Always record at the highest bit and sample rate possible because video uses audio with a 48k sample rate, not 44.1k. Any 44.1k samples you have will have to be upconverted to be used in a video production and this process always runs the risk of audio damage. Because of these potential problems with lower quality files, 48k sound effects are generally valued more by video editors and thus command a higher sale price should you choose to sell your sounds online.

There are two basic types of sound effects that you will be recording: “hits” and “ambiences.” Hits are single short sonic events such as a slap, gun-shot, or dog bark. Ambiences are longer background elements such as ocean waves, restaurant environments, or playground noises. In creating a library it is most valuable to have many of both types as they are both used in sound design. You will find that ambiences are the easiest to obtain as you merely have to go to a new location such as a supermarket or post office and just stand there and record. Hits need a little more forethought and preparation such as collecting the items you’d like to record or stalking the neighbor’s dog for that perfect dog bark.

The basics of recording a sound effect is literally as simple as hitting the record button. However, there are several tips to keep in mind in order to get the best recordings possible. First, make sure that you record as “hot” as possible, meaning with the loudest signal that does not clip or overload the microphone. If you notice a red LED light blinking when recording it means that your incoming signal is too hot and you will want to pull back your mic a bit from the source. You want the loudest signal without distortion. Related to this, it would also be wise to purchase a 10dB pad that fits between your mic and digital recorder will enable you to record sounds with high decibel levels, such as jet engines or weapons. The pad lowers the incoming signal by 10dB and can be found online for $20.

Second, try to keep background noises at a minimum. However, don’t be too obsessive over a “pure” recording because these background sounds can often afford surprising results such as an unexpected car honk, bird call or human noise. Also, much of the background noise can be filtered out when editing your recordings to create the sound effect product. The point here is to keep unwanted noise to a minimum but not so much that you might lose the opportunity for some unique recordings and slow yourself down being overly strict about the “perfect” recording environment.

Third, wind will ruin any recording so protect the mic with a windscreen or simply keep your recorder out of the wind by using physical barriers such as trees, walls, or even your jacket. Sometimes wind noise can be cut out during editing with a high pass filter and cutting frequencies below 200-500 khz but for the most part wind will destroy your recording efforts. Finally, your efforts can also be compromised if you have inadvertently recorded music in the background, such as the music played in a restaurant. This music is copyrighted and if it appears in your ambience recordings you will be violating copyright law and such recordings are essentially unusable.

These tips are simple and meant to point an aspiring sound effect artist in the right direction toward the creation of a sound effect library for use or for sale online. Future articles will discuss the process of editing, categorizing, and marketing these raw recordings.

Choose one of these sites to be your home site, and link to it from all of your other sites.
Usualy when selecting a home site for your music, select the site with the most features for free first!
Making sure that the site you choose is the fastest loading and works the best.

Most of these music sites that you sign up with have forums these days.
Be as active in as many of them that you can, make a link to your home page as your forum signature, if they let you.
Search engine spiders spider forums every day and the more posts you post, the more links you will have in google.
The more links you have, kinking to your home page in google, the higher google will rank your home page.

Sites with portable players that you can put on other sites that play your songs are a great resource for getting exposure
on places in the internet that wont host your mp3 songs.

MusicPlaces.com has a great portable player that will play your songs on sites that let you past code into them
like myspace, tagworld, and other places that let you use html, including forums, blogs, guest books...

If you sell your music, most sites these days have a Digital
Store.
Put your music for sale on as many of these places that you can.

So, you've got your guitar rig, amp, and some skills under your belt. You're looking to spice up your sound a bit with some effects, but you're not sure what kind to get, what they do, or anything else about them for that matter. Not to worry, choosing pedals is relatively simple. There are only a few major types, and though you can get many others kinds, keeping things simple is usually the best approach. In this article, I will outline the different types of pedals available, what you can expect from them, and how to choose the best model.

First and foremost, a gooding tuner pedal is an essential accessory for any gigging musician. Sure, you might be able to tune by ear just fine under normal circumstances, but things might get a bit harder on a noisy stage. A tuner pedal cuts off the signal from your guitar (so your audience doesn't have to hear the tuning process), and gives you visual indicators as you tune your string, allowing you to keep in perfect tune even in the most difficult of conditions. Though this isn't an "effects pedal," its such a key item that I still needed to mention it.

A reverb pedal is perhaps one of the best basic pedals you can get. Unless you're fortunate enough to own an amp with high quality built in reverb, you probably don't have a really good reverb sound available. Reverb adds a lot of depth and atmosphere to a piece of music. Of course, like many effects, it can be easily over used, but in moderation it is excellent. There are many types of reverb, ranging from high tech digital designs to really basic technologies. One of the most sought after reverb types is modeled after the spring reverb found in early Fender amplifiers. These are expensive, but they do give a very lovely vintage tone. If you're interested in a reverb unit, be sure to listen (and play through, if possible) each pedal to see if it has a sound that suites you well.

The most commonly desired pedal by many players is the distortion pedal. A distortion pedals, as its name implies, distorts the signal from your guitar to give a distinctive sound. Of course, there are many ways of accomplishing this distortion, so every pedal has its own unique sound. It's hard to give general guidelines for choosing a distortion pedal, since every one is completely different, but you should definitely make sure that your pedal does not sound too harsh. This harshness is a common flaw with cheaper or lower quality distortion pedals, so try to buy quality.

Another essential pedal is the delay pedal. A delay pedals plays back your guitar sample in a loop, with a given decay. It's a little hard to explain, but if you listen to almost all songs by U2, or "Run Like Hell" by Pink Floyd, you'll hear the effect clearly. It's a fairly complicated effect and requires precise timing to get the repeated loops to sound in rhythm, but the final effect is worth it. Definitely a pedal to check out. One of the most important aspects of choosing the delay pedal is that it has intuitive controls. You don't want to be fussing around with a bunch of fiddly controls on stage.

For the final pedal, I recommend getting whatever you want. This may seem like a copout on my part, but I can't speak at all to your personal sound and style. Are Music Listeners Getting the Real-deal?

In a recent interview that I conducted with Suzie Quatro, she succinctly summed up this current state of affairs. The subject of young artists being thrust into the media spotlight literally overnight seemed a bone of contention for her. Although instant fame is common occurrence it does seem to be happening more often than it has in years gone by.
Gone are the days of bands or singers traipsing the country in hired cars along with their P.A systems & playing to a crowd of 30 or less night after night for pittance.

Quatro said of overnight successes, 'They haven’t done their trade. One day they’re working in a supermarket, the next day they’re in Hollywood. It’s no wonder these kids go off the rails. They’re spoon-fed. Everything’s handed to them on a plate.' These words may sound harsh and more than a few famous artists may take offence, whether they’ve done their trade or not. I suspect those who have, infact, done their trade wouldn’t shout too loudly about it.

So is there a target to point a finger at? Is it the naivety of these young musicians? I doubt it. I suspect it’s a combination of desperation for fame and not necessarily wealth that drives the majority of them. Genuine musical integrity or pride seems to be left behind as so-called success beckons. With this, enter the umpteen middle-men who see the golden opportunity to make some serious money out of their new ‘product’. It is here where the fabrication and smokescreens begin. By the time an artist gets a song into the charts it is so far removed from what the artist initially was aiming to achieve. Unfortunately too many of them jump on the rollercoaster and cling to it for as long as they are able.

With regard to the internet and the music industry, it is loaded to the gills with extreme and legitimate talent; so much so that it would take one eons to sift through it all to actually find it. Flashy websites, blanket marketing and so forth will take the artist only so far; and not too far from home at that.

Since my discussion with Bob Findlay last week, he has recently had a song go to Number 1 on numerous internet radio and commercial radio stations. I asked him how he felt about this. 'It hasn’t changed a thing. There aren’t promoters or record labels calling me and I’m getting only marginally more feedback from people than I was the week before.' The song, 'A Thought Away', is a diversion from Findlays usual style. This also underwhelmed him. 'It’s not the usual sort of thing that I write, so no-one can guage what’s going to be well-received….least of all me.'

So who does decide what’s popular? Is it the listener? Most likely, but bare in mind that the listener has been programmed to some extent to be attracted to a certain artist or genre by flashy advertising, sledge-hammer-subtle promotion at every turn and the ‘must have’ attitude pushed at them by promoters, record companies and the way society in general is heading.

At the end of the day, however, the listener is the one who has the final say. One must wonder, though, at how heavily influenced by external forces that these choices are made.

Magnet: It produces a steady, non-changing magnetic field. The electro-magnet close to it will either get attracted to it or repelled, due to its alternating charge.

Voice-coil: It is the electromagnet made up of a coil of wire that is wrapped around a piece of metal of high conductivity.

Diaphragm: Also referred to as cone, it is a component that vibrates when the voice coil moves and produces sound waves.

Spider: Called the lower suspension, it is a cloth disc that only allows the voice coil and the bottom of the diaphragm to move backward and forward.

Surround: Called the upper suspension, it is a ring that stops the cone or the diaphragm from moving to sides. And together with the spider, it forms the suspension system for the diaphragm and the voice coil.

Dust cap: It is a cover that is attached to the cone.

Frame: A component that holds all the parts together.

Switching over to the working of a speaker, the components that should be mentioned at first are the voice coil and the magnet, because these together form the base of the whole technology. The wire of the voice coil is insulated with a narrow layer of varnish and the ends of the wire are connected to the terminals on the speaker frame with the help of tinsel leads. These wires are very flexible pieces of braided wires that allow electricity to pass.

However, as the electricity flows through the wires of the voice coil, it sets up a magnetic field around itself and this magnetic field interacts with the magnetic field of the magnet. And the closeness to the magnet causes the voice coil to move up and down. Now, if the charges are identical they will repel but if they are not then they will attract. It means that either it will draw the speaker down towards the magnet or will push it away.

As the voice coil starts moving, the diaphragm or the cone which is attached to the top of the moving voice coil also starts moving up and down. And this way the sound waves are generated from the electric impulses.
